Visibility Ordinance. Final Action

In its meeting this week, the Austin City Council acted to remove most of the provisions in a "Visitability" ordinance that was proposed by retiring council member Beverly Dunkerley. Following discussion by proponents and opponents, the new ordinance, to take effect January 1, 2009, will require just two things in all new homes:

  • Entry doors to lower-level bathrooms must have a minimum 30" clearance;
  • The walls in bathrooms must be reinforced to accomodate putting in handicap bars.

There is no change to the expanded visitability requirements for any homes built with some public funding.
