S/SW Austin Texas Shopping and Eating Options

Many Choices for Shopping and Eating in S/SW Austin

When my wife and I began getting acquainted with the Austin area over six years ago, we decided that we really liked south and southwest Austin because of its trees and green areas, and its many attractive subdivisions. But, choices for shopping and eating seemed quite limited in relation to the size and population of S/SW Austin.

That picture has changed! No longer do S/SW Austin residents need to go north of the river to shop or to eat out. New developments, located primarily on E-W corridors US/290/71, William Cannon and W. Slaughter Lane and on N-S roadways I-35 and Mopac, have added many options for those of us who choose to live on the south side of Austin

Map of Key Shopping Centers in the S/SW Austin, TX Area

This map shows most of the major (key) shopping centers in the S/SW Austin area. There are many other businesses that want your business, but there are too many to list or discuss on this site.

  • Super Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club

    • When its plans to build a new store near Circle C Ranch and Sendera subdivisions was opposed by residents and HOAs, Wal-Mart expanded, and recently opened, its existing store on the east side of Mopac at US 290/71 into a Super Wal-Mart. You can find, among other businesses, Rooms to Go, Chick-FilA, Goodyear, and a credit union in this development.
    • One of two Sam’s Clubs is located across from this Super Wal-Mart on the north side of US 290/71. The development also features Best Buy, Applebee’s and Serrano’s Restaurants, and Spec’s Liquor Store. The other Sam’s is located on I-35 between Stassney and Wm. Cannon.
    • Two other Super Wal-Mart stores are located in the huge Southpark Meadows development at I-35 and W. Slaughter, and between I-35 and Congress on US 290/71.

  • Sunset Valley Shopping Centers

    • The commercial developments just south of US 290/71 on Brodie Lane are a shopper’s delight. These include Sunset Valley Market Fair, Sunset Valley Village and Sunset Valley Homestead. These centers feature name-brand stores like Office Max, Home Depot, Academy Sporting Goods, Circuit City, TJ Maxx, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, Michaels and Linens & Things, Kohl’s, DSW Shoes, and Babies “R” Us. The whole area includes a number of nice restaurants.
    • Further south on Brodie near William Cannon shoppers will find Lowe’s, an HEB grocery store and other businesses.

  • Shopping Developments on the West side of Mopac south of US 290/71

    • Just south of US 290/71 is a shopping development with a Target, Office Depot and other small businesses.
    • The relatively new Shops at Arbor Trails is located at William Cannon and Mopac. Stores include Costco, Staples, Chuy’s Mexican and Chili’s Restaurants, other retail stores and banks.
    • Other developments on the N side of William Cannon include Randall’s grocery store and other businesses. There are three fitness centers in this area.

  • W. Slaughter Lane Shopping Developments

    • Escarpment Village, just west of Mopac in Circle C Ranch. Anchored by HEB, this center has a number of banks, small businesses and eating places.
    • The land just east of Mopac near Sendera and Circle C subdivisions, where Wal-Mart wanted to build, has recently been developed. Businesses include United Heritage Credit Union, Walgreen’s, Wendy’s, and Starbucks.
    • Shady Hollow Village, further east on W. Slaughter Lane. Businesses in this development include Randall’s, a credit union, and a number of eating places.
    • Tanglewood Village (HEB and small businesses), an older development, is located at Manchaca Road.
    • Southpark Meadows is the newest and largest shopping development in S/SW Austin. Located at I-35 and W. Slaughter Lane, it features Super Wal-Mart, Target, J. C. Penney’s, Target, Marshalls, OfficeMax, Computer City, Chick-FilA, Chili’s and Jason’s Deli and many other many name-brand and local retail stores and restaurants. Southpark Meadows has banks, furniture stores and a multi-screen movie theater.

Other key places for shopping and eating in S/SW Austin include the Barton Creek Mall (Mopac and Capital of TX Hwy.), Brodie Oaks (US 290/71 and Lamar), Westgate Shopping Center (US 290/71 and Westgate), and those along I-35 at Stassney and William Cannon.

Residents of S/SW Austin can still travel north of the river to shop and eat out. But you can likely find what you are looking for at one of the S/SW Austin developments!
