  • Neighborhood Location: Rim Rock is located southwest of Austin on FM-1826 (also known as Camp Ben McCullough Road) about four miles from Driftwood. It is about 19 miles from Downtown Austin. From Austin, travel Mopac and SH-45 to FM-1826, turn left and go 5-6 miles. From US-290, turn left on FM-1826 about a mile past the Oak Hill "Y". Travel about 9 miles to the first Rimrock entrance at Ador Canyon Pass, which leads into the original section of Rim Rock. Continue on FM-1826 to the newer sections of Rimrock. The second entrance is at Shelf Rock Road. A third section (entry is Towering Cedar Drive) is being developed.

Rim Rock's "Away-from-it-all" Soutwest Austin Location

One view of the Rim Rock neighborhood southwest of Austin.Rim Rock is designed to provide homeowners with the peaceful experience of living out in the Central Texas Hill Country. It is located just 19 miles from Downtown Austin via FM-1826. From Rim Rock, you can get to all things Austin and Central Texas with little trouble (depending on traffic, of course!). Rim Rock is a nice alternative for families who want to live in the county, but on larger lots than are available in subdivisions like BelterraHighpointe and Meridian (neighborhood links at the top of the page.).

Rim Rock ♦ Builders, Homes and Homesites

In Rim Rock, there are three key options for potential homeowners: (1) Purchase a lot in the original section and choose your custom builder. (2) Purchase an inventory or to-be-built home from either of the two major builders in the newer sections of Rim Rock. (3) Buy a home that is on the resale market.

All Rim Rock homes are built on lots a minimum of 1 acre in size. The largest lot available in the original section in April 2009 was just over 3 acres. Some lots have Hill Country views and back up to green areas.

Former Mercedes Homes Model in the Rim Rock subdivisionAs can be seen in the table above, homes in Rimrock come in a wide range of sizes: from 2,580 sq. ft. to over 4,600 sq. ft. Prices also vary widely.

In addition to several custom home builders, four major home builders are currently or soon to be building in Rim Rock.

Mercedes Homes opened a new model home in April 2011 in the original section of Rim Rock. The company offers feature-packed homes in sizes ranging from 2,896 sq. ft. up to 4,241 sq. ft. Base prices for the 9 floor plans begin at just over $300k, stretch to almost $420k.

Village Builders (Lennar Homes) is offering a number of home models in Rim Rock. These 1- and 2-story homes are packed with standard features designed to enhance your quality of life. Base prices in April 2011 ranged from the $320's to around $400k. The homes range in size from 2702 sq. ft. to 3946 sq. ft.

Scott Felder Homes began building homes in Rim Rock in 2011.

In early 2012, Gehan Homes is completing a model home and is beginning to build new homes in Rim Rock.

A number of elevation and upgrade options are offered by these builders.

Rim Rock Area Features

Residents of Rim Rock live just a short drive from Southwest Austin and all it offers. Shopping venues include The Shops at Arbor Trails (Costco), Escarpment Village (Circle C Ranch, HEB grocery store), and the Sam's Club & WalMart Super Center developments at Mopac and US-290/71.

The community is also near the Grey Rock and Plum Creek Golf Courses, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the Veloway, Hamilton Pool and other outdoor attractions.

Rim Rock Taxes and Utilities

Tax rates in Rim Rock, like those in many outlying residential developments, are higher than in Austin, for example. Why? Though there are no city taxes, the water service is provided through the Greenhawe WCID (water control and improvement district). Taxes from this WCID brought the total tax rate to near $3/$100 in property value in 2010. Other tax entities include the school district and Hays County.

All of the homes in Rimrock have septic systems. Electricity is provided by Pedernales Electric.

Rim Rock Subdivision ♦ Public Schools for Students

Rim Rock students learn the 3 R's and more at three schools of the Dripping Springs Independent School District. The school assignments for the 2011-2012 school year are:

  • Elementary School: Walnut Springs (300 Sportsplex Drive ♦ Dripping Springs, Texas 78620 ♦ 512/858-3800)
  • Middle School: Dripping Springs (940 Highway 290 West ♦ Dripping Springs, TX 78620 ♦ 512/858-3400)
  • High School: Dripping Springs (111 Tiger Lane ♦ Dripping Springs, TX 78620 ♦ 512/858-3100)

Since school attandance zones are redrawn occasionally, parents should verify which schools are assigned to the Rim Rock neighborhood with the Dripping Springs ISD.
